A layer of ice has blanketed the city of Memphis and the surrounding counties. The sleet is still falling from this rare ice storm. Little round balls of ice rest on windowsills and rooftops and cars and trees. It's 27 degrees. I planned to go early this moring to watch Brenda Schultz McCarthy's qualifying match plus possibly some of two or three others including American Brian Vahaly's match. But if the streets are icy I may not make it to the Racquet Club. That is the venue in the middle of the city of Memphis where the tournament is held each year.

There is a warning issued for the Memphis area that sleet and other frozen rain will fall over night. Hopefully the streets will not be too slick. It was 71 degrees a few days ago. A cold front must be coming from Arkansas.

Former top WTA Tour player Brenda Schultz McCarthy won her round one qualifying match today and plays tomorrow for a spot in the main draw. The main draw matches begin Monday.
