Today Williams along with the world number three Ons Jabeur of Tunisia will face Marie Bouzkova of the Chech Republic and Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain in a doubles first round match at the Rothesay International at Eastbourne.

Williams requested a singles wildcard at Wimbledon weeks ago and will be unseeded at next week's tournament at London meaning she could face a seeded player in a dramatic opening round match.

Currently ranked 1,204, Serena Williams will not have any rankings points after Wimbledon due to the tournament's inability to award rankings points this year.

Wimbledon this year refused entry to all Russian and Belarusian tennis players due to the conflict with Ukraine. The professional tennis tours responded with a removal of rankings points for Wimbledon this year.

Known for her powerful groundstrokes and aggressive serves and return of serves, Williams' game is suited for the fast grass surfaces and she will be perhaps an underdog favorite at Wimbledon.

The 40 year old Williams has never played Wimbledon's top seed; the 21 year old Iga Swiatek of Poland who has won her last six tournaments and looks almost unbeatable.

Williams played her first full time year of professional tennis in 1998 and has since won 23 singles grand slam titles trailing only Margaret Court of Australia (24) for the all time singles grand slam record.

The 36 year old men's world number four Rafael Nadal of Spain has won 22 singles grand slam titles.

Williams won her last Wimbledon title in 2016 before surprise final round losses in 2018 and 2019.

Due to their power and athleticism, Williams or her older sister Venus Williams has reached the Wimbledon final round 16 of the last 21 years.
