Novak Djokovic, Petra Kvitova Win Wimbledon Titles

Novak Djokovic, Petra Kvitova Win Wimbledon Titles LONDON-- Sunday at Wimbledon in the men’s final, the world number two Novak Djokovic of Serbia upset the world number one Rafael Nadal of Spain 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 to take his first London championship.

The 24 year old Djokovic took the first grand slam title of the year at the Australian Open in January. Djokovic, 48-1 this year, suffered his only loss of the year to Roger Federer of Switzerland in the semifinals of the French Open.

Monday Djokovic replaces Nadal as the ATP Tour’s number one ranked player.

Djokovic controlled many early points of the match with a powerful forehand serve to race to a two sets lead.

Monday the Serbian replaces Nadal as the ATP Tour’s number one ranked player.

Nadal had won 20 matches in a row at Wimbledon after taking titles at London in 2008 and 2010. In 2009 Nadal withdrew from Wimbledon citing a knee injury.

Saturday in the women’s final, the 21 year old eighth seeded Petra Kvitova upset the fifth seeded Maria Sharapova of Russia 6-3, 6-4 to take her first Wimbledon title.

Sharapova took her lone Wimbledon ttitle in 2004 as a 17 year old.

Kvitova used an aggressive forehand and the more consistent serve of the day to post the win.
