Venus Williams Tops Petra Kvitova In US Open Quarterfinal Thriller

Venus Williams To Meet Petra Kvitova In A Contest Of Power At The US Open Quarterfinals NEW YORK-- Last week at the US Open on Tuesday, the ninth seeded American Venus Williams defeated the 13th seeded Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(7-2) in a stunning quarterfinal night match which lasted two hours and thirty-five minutes.

Williams fell trailed 1-3 in set one behind several errors of her own combined with aggressive baseline play from Kvitova.

Down 1-3 in set one, Williams struck several aggressive groundstrokes to take the next five games in a row.

Kvitova took another lead to open set two; this time going ahead 3-0 before then leading 5-3.

With Kvitova serving for the set, Williams committed several additional errors as the American would would go zero for five in break point chances for the set.

Serving at four all in set three, Williams survived a four deuce, ten minutes long game to hold serve after striking several forceful shots including a 115 miles per hour ace down the tee and a down the line forehand winner.

The following games stayed on serve as the set entered a tiebreaker.

Ahead 2-1, Williams struck powerful down the line forehands during each of the following three points which would force groundstroke errors from Kvitova to send the American ahead 5-1.

Both players then double faulted to put Williams ahead 6-2.

On match point two, Kvitova sent a crosscourt backhand wide to end the match.
