Juan Martin del Potro Powers Past Roger Federer in US Open Quarterfinals, US Open 2017 NEW YORK-- Earlier this month at the US Open, the 24th seeded Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina upset the third seeded and tournament favorite Roger Federer of Switzerland 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(10-8), 6-4 in a stunning display of power tennis.

With Federer serving at 5 all 30-40 in the opening set, del Potro struck a crosscourt forehand passing shot winner to break serve and lead 6-5.

Then with the Argentine serving for the set, Federer netted three forehands then netted a backhand return to lose the set.

Del Potro saved four set points before leveling the tie breaker at 8 all with an inside out forehand down the line winner.

At 4 all, del Potro netted a forehand then struck another crosscourt forehand long to face set point.

Four service game holds later, del Potro served for the match at 5-4.

The Argentine struck a 128 miles per hour ace out wide to lead 30-0.

Then at 30 all, Federer sent a crosscourt forehand volley long to face match point.

A 130 miles per hour serve out wide from del Potro set up a Federer crosscourt backhand stab return which del Potro hit for a down the line forehand winner to end the match.
