However Tauson doublefaulted on her first set point before netting a crosscourt backhand return to reach 6 all.
Osaka struck a powerful down the line forehand winner to reach matchpoint at 8-7 before Tauson netted an inside out crosscourt forehand to end the match.
This week Osaka's ranking has risen from 49 to a live ranking of 24.
Osaka won four grand slam titles (Australian Open in 2019 and 2021, US Open in 2018 and 2020) before missing 2023 on a maternity leave.
