Roger Federer Defeats Andy Murray In Cincinnati Quarterfinals CINCINNATI--Friday at the Western & Southern Open quarterfinals, the 2nd seeded Roger Federer of Switzerland defeated the 8th seeded Andy Murray of Great Britain 6-4, 7-5 to advance into the semifinal round of play.

Federer went ahead an early break to reach 3-2 following a Murray crosscourt forehand hit wide at 30-40.

It was the first time of the week that Murray had lost a service game.

Serving down a break at 3-5, Murray netted a crosscourt forehand, then hit a forehand down the line long to drop the set.

Early in set two, Murray reduced his unforced error count to break serve twice to lead 4-1.

However serving at 4-1 15-40, Murray hit an ace followed

For the match Federer won 17 points at the net to Murray’s five points won at the net.

by a crosscourt backhand wide to lose serve.

Attacking the net, Federer won the next three games to lead 5-4.

Both players held their next service games to reach 6-5.

Serving to stay in the match, Murray hit a crosscourt backhand winner to lead 30-0.

Leading 40-30; however, Murray lost a 21 shot rally after hitting a backhand down the line long to reach deuce.

Federer struck a backhand winner at the net to reach matchpoint.

A netted inside out crosscourt forehand from Murray ended the match after one hour and 33 minutes of play.

For the match Federer won 17 points at the net to Murray’s five points won at the net.

The win for Federer evened the duos’ head to head record 11-11.

In tonight’s semifinals action, Federer topped the 5th seeded Milos Raonic of Canada 6-2, 6-3 to move into Sunday’s final round match.

In the final, Federer will meet the 6th seeded David Ferrer of Spain who defeated the unseeded Julien Benneteau of France 6-3, 6-2 in today’s semifinals.

Head to head, Federer leads Ferrer 15-0; however the duo’s most recent match; only last week in Toronto was relatively close at 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
