Madrid--( Serena Williams of the USA Wednesday, playing with both knees taped dropped the first set 6-4 and took an injury timeout before retiring due to pain in her left left knee.

"It's beyond unfortunate this has happened and I can't even stress how disappointed I am," Williams said.

Williams lost the round robin match to Anna Chakvetadze of Russia but is still in the tournament due to its round robin format and is scheduled to play rival and world number one Justine Henin of Belgium Thursday. After the match, Williams went to the hospital to get an MRI on her swollen knee. The American had knee surgery in 2003, and also missed several events in 2006 because of knee problems.

Williams will need to be in better form tomorrow than she displayed today where she appeared slow to move to balls and made more errors than we normally see from her. Henin is playing some of her best tennis so it could be a fine match. Should Williams not be fit to play, Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli will step in in her place as the Madrid tournament's alternate player.
