That seemed to confirm
that Williams would indeed not make her fourth tournament withdrawal of 2007 due to her lingering left wrist injury and recovery, but when
I saw Venus Williams myself, it may have been the final confirmation. (It's true by the way, Venus looks prettier in person than on television.)
Williams is said to have had wrist surgery sometime after her last WTA Tour match at Luxembourg in September of last year to repair a
damaged left wrist which forced her to drop her main weapon, the two-handed backhand and to hit one-handed slice backhands. "It's fixed,"
her mother Oracene Price reportedly said in January.
While Venus gave her brief interview Saturday to the local media, Richard Williams watched at the grandstand court as family friend and
fellow WTA Tour pro Alexandra Stevenson also of the USA lost her qualifying match.
Dressed in a dark blue warm up and tennis shoes with her long hair pulled back in a ponytail to one side falling over her shoulder, Williams
walked fast in and
out of the interview and appeared to be in good spirits. The media thanked Venus for the interview and then with a wave and a smile
she was gone.
Venus Williams faces Akiko Morigami of Japan Monday night at 6:30pm CST USA in round one maindraw singles.
